Key points

Ryan Giggs ‘conditioned’ me to want ‘instant’ message replies, ex-girlfriend says

Kate Greville tells the court that Ryan Giggs was “like two different people”.

“He could be supportive… other times he wasn’t supportive and he was undermining,” she says.

“He would pepper the niceness with horribleness, and the other way around as well.

“Towards the end he was very unsupportive.”

Chris Daw QC, defending Giggs, says Ms Greville and the ex-footballer expected “instant” responses to messages they sent to each other.

“He had conditioned me into behaviour like that,” she tells the court.”

She says Giggs expected her to reply to messages “in seconds” so she expected the same from him.

She adds: “Ryan was attached to his phone. For him to not look at his phone for an hour was not normal at all.”

Giggs ‘supported’ ex-girlfriend in row with his best friend, court hears

Chris Daw QC, defending Ryan Giggs, asks Kate Greville about a message in which she asked him for support when she was setting up a business.

Mr Daw says Ms Greville has accused Giggs in her evidence of “undermining” her career.

“You were actively pursuing different career options… and he was entirely supportive,” the barrister says.

“At that point, yes,” Ms Greville replies.

Mr Daw says Ms Greville has accused Giggs of “controlling” her relationships with others.

The barrister refers to a message about Giggs’s best friend who had fallen out with Ms Greville.

When she explained the circumstances of the row to him, Giggs said his friend needed to apologise, the court hears.

“This was Mr Giggs supporting you in an argument with his best friend,” Mr Daw says.

Trial of Ryan Giggs resumes

The trial of Ryan Giggs has resumed for a fourth day.

Chris Daw QC, defending Giggs, is cross-examining Kate Greville, the ex-girlfriend of the former football star and the complainant in the case.

What is expected to happen in court today?

Kate Greville, Ryan Giggs’s ex-girlfriend and the complainant in the case, is expected to give evidence again today.

She is being cross-examined by Giggs’s defence barrister Chris Daw QC.

It will be her third day in the witness box where she is giving evidence from behind a screen.

Recap: Giggs’s ex-girlfriend denies bruising was caused by ‘rough sex’ – and tells court she was a ‘slave’ to his demands

An ex-girlfriend of Ryan Giggs told his assault trial on Wednesday that she was “a slave” to his demands as she denied that bruising on her body was caused by “rough sex”.

Kate Greville claimed the former Manchester United star was regularly aggressive and at times violent after “luring” her into a relationship when they were both married to other people.

During cross-examination, Giggs’s defence barrister Chris Daw QC asked Ms Greville about her remark that she was a “slave to his every need and every demand”.

“That’s what it felt like,” she replied. “If Ryan said do something, I would do it.

“He made me feel like I had to do what he said, otherwise there were consequences.”

Kate Greville sent intimate videos to Giggs after his alleged ‘blackmail’ email, court hears

Chris Daw QC, defending Ryan Giggs, says the footballer told Kate Greville in May 2019 he had deleted their intimate videos.

The defence barrister says Ms Greville then sent Giggs several intimate videos, six weeks after he allegedly threatened to blackmail her.

Asked if she was concerned Giggs may blackmail her with a sex tape after the previous alleged incident, she replied: “No, because I thought he had changed.

“I thought we were back in a good place.”

Kate Greville feared Ryan Giggs was threatening to share ‘sexual video’, court hears

The jury has returned to court after a short break in proceedings.

Kate Greville is being asked about an email allegedly sent by Ryan Giggs with an attachment and the subject header of “blackmail”.

In her police interview, Ms Greville said the attachment was a video but she didn’t open it and deleted it, the court hears.

Ms Greville tells the court she thought it was a “sexual video”.

Chris Daw QC, defending Giggs, says: “You knew full well it wasn’t a sexual video, didn’t you?”

Ms Greville replies: “How?”

Mr Daw says: “Because you watched it.”

Ms Greville says she did not watch it, deleted the video and later could not find the attachment but handed her laptop over to police for them to look for it.

The court is played the video allegedly attached to the email, which shows a group of women wearing Santa hats dancing to Last Christmas.

Mr Daw says the video shows Ms Greville dancing at a work party.

Ms Greville tells the court: “At the time he sent it I thought it was a sexual video.”

She adds that Giggs had just sent her a naked photo of himself at the time.

Kate Greville lost phone in river and had another phone stolen in street, court hears

The court hears Kate Greville told police she lost her phone in a river when she went in to rescue her dog and another phone was stolen in the street.

“I was very distraught about that,” she says.

Police asked if they could access her iCloud account and she initially agreed and then refused, the jury was told.

The court heard Ms Greville had concerns that private information about her work would be accessed.

She becomes tearful as she tells the court: “I didn’t want him damaging my career.

“I was scared.”

Chris Daw QC, defending Giggs, says Ms Greville allowed police access to a “limited amount of information” from her phone.

He asks: “Did you delete anything that might have been relevant?”

She says she deleted some messages related to an ex-colleague after her phone was stolen.
