Carlos Alcaraz has been ruled out of the Cincinnati Open

Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open due to an ongoing wrist injury, increasing worries over his US Open title defence, which begins on August 30, live on Sky Sports.

Alcaraz remains at world No 2 despite not having played competitively since April, when he withdrew in Barcelona because of the injury.

The problem prevented Alcaraz from defending his French Open title and denied him the chance to attempt to win Wimbledon for a third time.

“We ⁠know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon ‌as possible,” Cincinnati Open tournament director Bob Moran said.

Alcaraz may have one more chance to get some matches in ahead of the US Open if he plays at the Winston-Salem Open, which begins on August 23.

Alcaraz triumphed in Cincinnati last year after Jannik Sinner withdrew from the final. Shortly after, he went on to pick up his second US Open win.
