Sky Sports’ Matt Kabir Floyd explains the ‘Clicky Ponting’ amateur cricket story that made global headlines.

The Saltburn cricketer nicknamed ‘Clicky Ponting’ following allegations of cheating has been handed a two-year ban, according to reports.

Brian Devine found himself making headlines across the world this summer when he was caught apparently clicking his fingers at first slip during a match for Saltburn’s second XI to trick the umpire into thinking the batsman had edged the ball.

Devine was given the nickname ‘Clicky Ponting’ in reference to former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, with the north Yorkshire and south Durham league subsequently launching an investigation.

Sky Sports News have contacted the north Yorkshire Cricket Board and Saltburn for comment.

Teesside Live have reported that Devine has been given a two-year ban from all cricket, while Saltburn have been fined £300 and the second XI relegated to the third division, where they will begin next season with a 60-point deduction.

Saltburn have said in a statement reported on gazettelive.co.uk: “The club fully participated in the disciplinary proceedings and accept the decision of the appeal following the original decision from the league.

“We are now focusing on preparations for the 2027 season.”
