Trott replaces Flintoff as England Lions head coach

Jonathan Trott will coach the England Lions this winter, filling the role vacated by Andrew Flintoff.

Flintoff stood down from the position with immediate effect in August, with Trott stepping in to lead the side’s recent T20 series win over the touring Sri Lanka side.

Now the three-time Ashes winner, who previously enjoyed success as head coach of Afghanistan, has agreed to stay in post for next six months.

Trott, 45, will oversee a white-ball tour of the West Indies starting on October 27, a trip to South Africa which runs until December 23 and a third leg in Sri Lanka running between February and March.

Trott was one of the names in the frame when England were looking for a new Test coach, a role which ultimately went to Stephen Fleming, having seen his stock rise by taking Afghanistan to a groundbreaking semi-final appearance at the T20 World Cup in 2024. He also completed a short consultancy stint with Ireland in July.

“I’m delighted to be back working in the England set-up and hugely excited to take on the role of head coach of the England Lions,” he said.

“Having played for the Lions myself, I know how valuable the experience can be in helping players develop, both on and off the field, and it played an important part in my own journey.

Trott discusses Ben Stokes’ retirement announcement and gives his thoughts on why Stokes may have made the decision.

“Jonathan’s coaching expertise, and as a former England player who knows the value of the Lions programme having come through it himself, will be invaluable for those players as they look to progress their careers.”

Trott averaged 44.08 in 52 Test appearances for England and 51.25 in 68 ODIs between 2009 and 2015.
