Vardy vs Rooney: ‘Wagatha Christie’ trial begins LIVE!

While we don’t yet know the full list of people who we’ll be hearing from in court over the course of the next six days, we do have some information on some key witnesses.

Coleen Rooney’s skeleton argument says we can expect to hear from her husband Wayne Rooney and his cousin Claire Rooney on day six of the trial.

We don’t know if Rebekah Vardy’s husband Jamie Vardy will be giving evidence – but Vardy’s skeleton argument does say both Jamie and his social media manager, Adam Jones, refused to let their mobile phones be examined by Rooney’s experts. They say the messages were later “deleted and could not be restored”.

Rebekah Vardy’s team say that when Coleen Rooney was attempting to find out who was leaking her stories she “went through the mental Rolodex of her Instagram account” to try to figure out who it was.

Rooney’s team say Vardy was at the time: “Secretly asking for information about others, which they didn’t want to be published in The Sun”.

Discussion continues over various applications for certain evidence to be struck out, or to be added to the case at this late stage.

There is now a somewhat dry discussion over evidence and witnesses, with mention of Harpreet Robertson, who was the family liaison officer for the Football Association during the Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 international.

Coleen Rooney’s team say the seats at the Euro 2016 match which were taken by Rebekah Vardy and her friends were reserved for Ms Robertson, and Ms Robertson is a relevant witness to show Vardy sat in the seats not because “they were the nearest available”, but for another reason.

Vardy’s team say Ms Robertson’s evidence would be “unattributed hearsay” as they say she would only be repeating things “told [to her] by member of the touring party”.

Coleen Rooney’s lawyer David Sherborne is discussing a situation in which Rooney alleges Rebekah Vardy moved seats at a Euro 2016 so as “to get close to her to help her own interests and publicity”.

Rooney says in her written witness statement that Vardy was “fame-hungry” and alleges she was working in collaboration with two picture agencies – Fame Flynet and Splash News.

Mr Sherborne says Rooney talked with Vardy and her friends at the time, and asked them not to sit behind them as the seats were reserved, to which he says Vardy replied: “We can sit wherever we like. F*** off.”

Vardy has said they were “the nearest seats available”.

Coleen Rooney’s lawyer, David Sherborne, tells the court that throughout Rebekah Vardy’s written evidence, her team make mention of the fact that she was always “friendly and kind” to Rooney.

They also say that something that will be important to their case is the fact that Vardy says she didn’t want publicity, but preferred to “blur into the background”. They refute that Vardy was any kind of wall flower, and actually did crave the press attention her team says she shied away from.

We are now hearing from Coleen Rooney’s team, and her lawyer David Sherborne is discussing the alleged deletion of messages.

Rooney’s team say there has been many messages, including emails and WhatApp messages – which have been deleted, and so are not able to be used as evidence.

Rooney’s skeleton argument says: “The loss and destruction of evidence by the Claimant and Ms Watt – which, alarmingly, continues to evolve even in recent days – has been flagrant and beyond belief.”

It lists alleged deletions and destructions including WhatApp messages between Vardy and her agent Caroline Watt, the breakdown of Vardy’s laptop and Ms Watt’s mobile phone getting dropped in the North Sea.

They say even Vardy’s team considered such losses to be “somewhat surprising”.

Both Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney are here – Coleen is sitting next to her husband, footballer Wayne Rooney, and Rebekah is sat slightly more to the side of the court. Her husband, Jamie Vardy isn’t in court.

Both have opted for dark outfits today – befitting of the Royal Courts of Justice, which for those of you who have never visited, is very grand.

Hugh Tomlinson QC – from Rebekah Vardy’s team – is currently talking to the court, discussing some administrative issues, including the delivery of some files to the judge, which he says have possibly “got stuck in the junk filter”.

He says his client, Vardy, is here to “vindicate her reputation as the allegations [against her] are false”.

There is no sign of her husband, Leicester City star Jamie Vardy, that we have seen.
