Warrington Wolves moved up to fourth in the Betfred Super League table after recovering from a lacklustre start to claim a comprehensive 48-18 win at Castleford Tigers .
Having lost four of their last six matches, including three in a row on the road, Warrington were made to pay for an error-strewn first 20 minutes as the Tigers went 16-6 ahead at the OneBore Stadium.
But Matty Ashton, Toby King and Toafofoa Sipley touched down to turn the tide and put Warrington 24-18 in front at half-time, and James Harrison and Leon Hayes extended the Wolves’ lead after the break.
Ashton scored again, taking his tally to five tries in two matches against Castleford this year having bagged a hat-trick when Warrington claimed a 72-6 victory in March, before Ben Currie scored.
Teenage scrum-half Ewan Irwin was excellent with the boot, splitting the posts with all eight conversions, to make it back-to-back defeats for Castleford.
While Castleford were stuffed by rivals Wakefield last weekend, they claimed a shock win over Leeds in their last home match and Warrington head coach Sam Burgess had warned they would be no pushovers.
On this occasion, they could not find the defensive intent required to stop Warrington on their push for a spot at the top end of the top six.
Sailor misses late kick as York edge thriller
Oli Field’s double further dented St Helens’ play-off hopes despite Jack Welsby’s try-of-the-season contender as York edged to a thrilling 34-32 victory at the LNER Community Stadium.
Saints got off to the perfect start when Welsby kicked through to allow Jake Davies to touch down, with Jackson Hastings adding the conversion.
York hit back almost immediately when Toa Mata’Afa put Jon Bennison over in the corner, and although he was unable to convert his own score, he was successful after Field capitalised on Cody Hunter’s well-timed pass with a neat step to make it 10-6.
The lead proved short-lived when Hunter was unable to claim Hastings’ up and under and Shane Wright pounced to score a converted try, and the visitors surged further head when Welsby burst through Denive Balmforth’s tackle after the fleet-footed Harry Robertson had raced down the right wing.
However, Balmforth swiftly made amends with a sniping finish and Bennison levelled it up at 16-16 at the break.
The Knights were temporarily reduced to 12 when Ata Hingana was sent to the bin for a high tackle on Davies, but it was they who regained the lead with 53 minutes gone when prop Paul Vaughan barged his way over and Bennison added the extra points.
They went 12 points ahead after Saints failed to deal with Hunter’s lofted kick, Nikau Williams touching down and Bennison making it 28-16, but Robertson’s brilliance allowed Tristan Sailor to feed Welsby to complete a length-of-the-field move which was converted by Hastings.
Field’s second try and a fifth successful Bennison conversion gave the Knights breathing space, but late scores from Robertson and Jacob Douglas gave Saints a chance.
Regular goal kicker Hastings remained on the field but was holding his glute so Sailor had to deputise and missed the crucial kick to level the game.
