Gianni Infantino set to remain in post as FIFA president following marathon crisis talks in Morocco on Wednesday; Infantino believes he is accountable to 211 football associations making up FIFA, and has enough support in parts of the world to continue

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is set to remain in post – for the moment – after marathon crisis talks in Morocco on Wednesday.

Infantino instead believes he is accountable to the 211 football associations which make up FIFA.

He appears to have calculated he still has enough support – especially in parts of South America, Africa and Asia – to carry on.

He was pictured at a Women’s AFCON game following the seven-hour meeting on Wednesday, smiling and sitting next to his secretary general Mattias Grafstrom – who was criticising him on Tuesday.

It is now up to his critics to decide their next move.

They could call an emergency FIFA Council meeting, or an emergency FIFA Congress and hold a vote of no confidence in Infantino.

Otherwise, they have until November 18 to put up at least one rival candidate to take on Infantino in the next presidential election in March.
