The opening day of Formula 1’s new era ended with Lando Norris on top of the timesheets at pre-season testing as the McLaren driver enjoyed a late run to topple Ferrari, with the favoured teams all making strong starts to 2022 in their much-changed cars.
Leclerc had led most of Day One in Barcelona and was joined at the front by team-mate Carlos Sainz after handing over the reigns of Ferrari’s F1-75 at lunch, with the Scuderia looking set for a one-two.
But Norris found pace deep into the first day of track action, setting the pace with a 1:19.568 – more than half a second clear of Leclerc.
